How to Clean a Radiator Internally

When it comes to thoroughly cleaning a radiator, especially older or heavily used models, an internal flush can help remove any accumulated silt, debris, and corrosion.

  1. Remove Reducing Bushes & End Caps
Before flushing, remove any old reducing bushes and end caps. This step allows for better access to the interior of the radiator.
  2. High-Pressure Heated Water Flush
For internal cleaning, we use a purpose-made flushing tank to introduce high-pressure heated water, which flushes out loose materials like corrosion and debris effectively. Depending on the radiator size, it may be moved manually or with a forklift.

How to Clean a Radiator Externally

Cleaning the radiator’s exterior, particularly before painting or polishing, requires a different approach. Here’s how to tackle external cleaning for the best results.

  1. Blasting Process in a Purpose-Built Unit
We use a high-carbon steel grit blasting technique in our dedicated blasting unit. This process removes old paint, rust, and surface imperfections, leaving a textured surface ideal for primer and paint application.
  2. Steel Grit Blasting Media
Steel grit, an angular media created by crushing high-grade steel shot, provides an ideal texture. Over time, the grit mixture breaks down to create a blend of coarse and fine grains that thoroughly clean the radiator’s surface.
  3. Alternative Blasting Media
While we primarily use steel grit, we can employ other blasting media like aluminium oxide or chilled iron for custom applications. This option is available for clients needing unique finishes for more specialised projects.

How to Clean a Radiator in the Home

Regular maintenance of an installed radiator is relatively straightforward but varies based on the finish. Here’s how to keep your radiator clean and well-maintained in your home.

How to Clean Painted Radiators

For radiators with a painted finish, general housekeeping is usually all that’s needed. Dust between the sections using a radiator cleaning brush, which helps you reach narrow spaces that may accumulate dust over time.

How to Clean Polished Radiators

Polished radiators require a bit more care to maintain their finish. Here are some steps to keep them looking their best:

  1. Avoid Moisture and Rust
Avoid drying wet items on polished radiators, as moisture can lead to rust. To maintain shine, oil the radiator 3-4 times per year using a light oil like WD-40.
  2. Routine Oil Cleaning
If any spots appear, lightly scrub them with fine wire wool or a Scotch-Brite pad soaked in oil. Gently rub in a circular motion to polish the affected area. Afterward, wipe the surface with a clean cloth and reapply a small amount of oil.
